GGACC and BAYFF Youth Casting

We are pleased to be offering youth-only casting sessions led by Certified Casting Instructors as well as a knot-tying course at the Golden Gate Angling & Casting Club (GGACC) in partnership with the Bay Area Youth Fly Fishers (BAYFF). The first session is Sunday, July 9th, 2023 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. The course will be focused on novice casters between the ages of 10 and 13 or 5th to 7th grades. Rods and knot-tying needs are supplied for young casters.  We will keep the two casting sessions to one hour each with the alternate hour being the knot-tying and afterward lunch will be served. 

For ages 10-13, A parent or Guardian must be in attendance during the entire event and the release must be signed.

Oakland Casting Club Event

The Bay Area Youth Fly Fishers is a collaborative partnership of local angling & casting clubs and conservation organizations dedicated to enabling a new generation of fly fishers and conservation minded youth. 

Kids ages 9-12 years old are invited to an introduction to fly fishing at The Oakland Casting Club pools in McCrea Memorial Park in the Oakland hills. This event is aimed at drawing families who value fun learning activities for their children and grandchildren that reward patience and practice. Kids will learn about Casting & Equipment, Knots & Rigging, and Conservation – important skills and knowledge they’ll need to fish with family, friends, mentors and fishing guides.

All equipment and materials will be provided for the Youth Participants.

Additional Bay Area Youth Events will be scheduled in 2019 to reinforce accomplishments and skills progression.  


 Please Note: All BAYFF sponsored learning sessions, require full-time adult parent or guardian supervision and the signing of liability and photo release forms in advance, through registration on EventBrite.

Golden Gate Trout Unlimited Event - 18th Annual First Cast Day

Presented by: Golden Gate Trout Unlimited

As part of BAYFF, Golden Gate Trout Unlimited’s 18th Annual First Cast Day will be held at the Marin Civic Center Lagoon on Sunday, Sep 15, 2019. Youth ages 10-18 years old (accompanied by their parents or guardian) are invited to an introduction to fly fishing.

This event is aimed at drawing families who value fun learning activities for their children and grandchildren that reward patience and practice.

Registration for the event is free, limited to 36 participants. Activities commence at 8:30 AM. The participants will rotate through six teaching stations, with 30 minutes spent at each station, which include:

  • Reading the Waters,

  • Gear & Rigging

  • Knots

  • Fly Casting

  • Fly Tying

  • Entomology

Adults may also take lessons with a Master Casting Instructor, learning not only how to fly cast like a champion, but also how to coach their youngster in fly casting.

A BBQ lunch will be served with cheeseburgers, hotdogs, salads, fruit, beverages, and chocolate chip cookies.

Please note: the event location will be at the Civic Center Lagoon picnic area on the south side of the lagoon near the playground on Civic Center Drive, San Rafael.

Chris Korich, World Casting Champion and U.S. Team Coach, along with volunteer instructors from famous Bay Area angling & casting clubs, are helping prepare local kids (ages 9-12) for future fly fishing opportunities.

FUN fly casting and knot tying sessions will cover the following foundational skills.

  • Proper Grip & Stance Alignment

  • Roll Casting & Short Aerial Casts

  • Line Extending & Retrieving

  • How To Land Fish & Release

  • Basic Knot Tying & Home Practice

  • Tackle Care & Repair 

This youth-oriented instruction is focused on teaching FUN-damental skills, drills and casting games, so youngsters can learn to master shorter casts, tie basic knots, and fish with more experienced anglers or guides!

  • Date: Saturday, May 18th 2019

  • Time: 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM

  • Cost: $6.00

  • Includes All equipment & lesson supplies

Like many BAYFF kids, Maxine McCormick started learning to cast and fly fish when she was 9. At age 12, she became the youngest adult division GOLD medalist and World Champion in sports history! 

  • 3-Time World Fly Casting Champion in accuracy and distance events

  • 3 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze medal at 2016 and 2018 WC of Flycasting

  • 2 World Records in both accuracy and distance events

  • 4 consecutive years on prestigious All American Team since 2015

  • Top female accuracy fly caster in North America since 2014

  • Holds all National Junior fly casting records for ages 9-12

  • Presented with 'California Legislature Assembly Resolution Award' in 2016

  • Inducted into 'The California Outdoors Hall of Fame' in 2019

Special guest Maxine McCormick will be providing a demonstration during lunch.


Youth tickets have sold out, however we are still accepting registration for Adult attendees (free to observe), volunteers, and lunch tickets.

First Cast Day

Presented by: Golden Gate Trout Unlimited & FishFirst

Youth ages 10-18 are invited to the First Cast Day held at the Marin Civic Center Lagoon, Sunday, Sep 16,  9:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.  Limited to 36 participants.

Participants will cycle through 6 activity stations (30 min each) to include Reading the Waters,  Gear & Rigging,  Key Knots,  Fly Casting Fly Tying, and Entomology.  This will be followed by a drawing (each participant receives a raffle ticket) for tackle, gear, and other fly fishing equipment, and a delicious FREE BBQ lunch.  

Participants with accompanying adult supervision will be invited to coached fishing outings on Alpine Lake and Putah Creek to reinforce First Cast Day learning.

Location: Civic Center Lagoon picnic area on the south side of the lagoon near the playground on Civic Center Drive, San Rafael.

The Bay Area Youth Fly Fishers is a collaborative partnership of Bay Area Fly Fishing and Conservation organizations dedicated to enabling a new generation of fly fishers and conservation minded youth. 

Girls and boys will be introduced to a sport they can enjoy for a lifetime with family and friends.  The age range for this May event is narrow by design (2017-2018 school grades 4-7). It’s aimed at drawing younger families who value fun learning activities for their children and reward patience and practice.  This event is the first in a year round program of activities with rewards designed to reinforce accomplishments and skills progression.  Kids will learn about Fly Casting, Knots & Rigging, Fly Tying, and Conservation – all they’ll need to fish with family, friends, mentors and guides.

Please review the waivers below, print, sign, date and bring them with you to turn in at the event. 

Note on 5/16: Please note that the liability waiver forms have now been revised by legal counsel to include the city of San Francisco. These replace the previous forms. All attendees (parents/guardians signing for their youth attendees, volunteers, non-participating adults) are required to sign these new forms and turn them in at the event check-in table on May 19. If you do not have a printer available, we will have extra blank copies available at check-in. We apologize for the inconvenience to those who may have already signed the prior liability waiver forms.
